On 12 August 2008, Rovers met Championship side Watford in the Carling Cup first round. Rovers boss Paul Trollope named the exact same side that had lost to Carlisle United 3-2 on the opening day of the season, although Charlie Reece and Tom Parrinello were added to the subs bench.

Rovers appeared to match their opponents for much of the game, but a late goal from future Rovers player Will Hoskins handed Watford the win.
