Bristol Rovers first used squad numbers for a competitive game at the start of the 1999–2000 season, when the Football League introduced them following the Premier League's earlier introduction of them.
Firsts[]
The first competitive game played by The Pirates under the squad number system was a 0–0 draw with Brentford in Division Two on 7 August 1999.
The starting lineup for that game was 1 Lee Jones, 2 David Pritchard, 3 Trevor Challis, 4 Steve Foster, 5 Andy Thomson, 6 Andy Tillson, 7 Ronnie Maugé, 8 David Hillier, 10 Jamie Cureton, 11 Jason Roberts and 12 Robbie Pethick.
The first squad numbered substitute was 19 Frankie Bennett, who was the only sub used in that same match.
