Rovers' first competitive meeting with the re-formed Newport County ended in a 1–0 defeat at Rodney Parade, with former Rovers man Andy Sandell's penalty proving to be the difference between the sides.

The Newport lineup included two other ex-Pirates in Chris Zebroski and David Pipe, who was lucky not to be sent off in the first half following a crunching tackle on Tom Lockyer.
