Mikkel Andersen is a Danish goalkeeper who joined Rovers on loan from Reading on 1 September 2009, transfer deadline day. He signed for four months, until 1 January 2010, and was immediately added to the starting lineup for Rovers' next game, replacing Rhys Evans between the sticks. He went on to play in all of Rovers' 18 league games during the spell, and on 30 December 2009 it was announced that his stay was being extended by a further month. The Pirates had wanted to keep him until the end of the season, but Reading were without a manager at the time and were not willing to commit him to a long term stay until an appointment had been made.
Eventually the extension to the end of the season was agreed and Mikkel went on to play a total of 39 games for Rovers, all in League One, before returning to his parent club.
He was selected for the Danish squad for the 2010 Toulon Tournament, where he reached the final and was named 'Goalkeeper of the Tournament'. Unfortunately for him the Ivory Coast took the trophy, thanks to a 3–2 victory.
Andersen rejoined Rovers on a month long loan prior to the start of the 2010-11 season. Andersen was not expected to rejoin Rovers, despite public acknowledgement from manager Paul Trollope that he wanted to bring Mikkel back to the club. However, following a pre-season injury to Luke Daniels, forcing his return to West Bromwich Albion, the fan favourite made a comeback. His loan was extended for a further four months on August 31st, and he eventually left the club on 4 January 2011 to be replaced by the aforementioned Luke Daniels.
Career[]
Mikkel started out with AB Copenhagen in Denmark, before moving to England in January 2007 to join Reading. He was sent out for a number of short-term loan spells during his time at the Berkshire club, to Torquay United, Rushden & Diamonds, Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion before being loaned to Rovers in 2009 and again in 2010.
After leaving Rovers for the final time in January 2011 he had a spell of 19 months without a first team game, which ended when he was loaned to Portsmouth for three months. He made a return to his native Denmark in 2013 when he was loaned out yet again, this time to Superliga side Randers FC.
