Matt Gill joined Rovers as part of a massive overhaul of the club's playing and coaching staff in the summer of 2011. He is a midfielder who signed for The Pirates after being released by Norwich City at the end of the 2010–11 campaign, and was appointed club captain in time for the start of his first season in Bristol.

CareerEdit

Matt started out as a trainee at Peterborough United, and was promoted into their senior squad during the 1997–98 season. He went on to make 151 league appearances for The Posh, where he remained until 2004, and then played 57 times in the league for Notts County between 2004 and 2006.

In 2006 he dropped out of the Football League to play for then-Conference side Exeter City, where he played alongside his future manager, Paul Buckle. He twice reached the Conference play-off final with The Grecians, losing to Morcambe in 2007 before defeating Cambridge United in 2008, a victory made even more sweet by the fact they beat local rivals Torquay United in the semi-finals. After a further year with Exeter in League Two Matt was signed by Norwich City in 2009, though the move proved to be less than successful. He made just twelve league appearances for the Norfolk club in two years, and was loaned out to Peterborough United and Walsall during the 2010–11 season before being released in the summer of 2011, whereupon he was signed for Rovers by Paul Buckle.
