James Tyrell is a defender who progressed through the Rovers youth system at the Bristol Academy of Sport, graduating to the first team squad in the summer of 2008, the same year as Joe White and Ben Swallow. He failed to make any first team appearances during his time with The Pirates, but he was an unused substitute three times. The first of these was on 6 February 2010, when he was on the bench for Rovers' 0–0 draw with Walsall, and he was also named in the matchday 18 for the return fixture three days later. His only other appearance on the bench came on 20 February 2010, when he was named in the squad that lost 1–0 to Gillingham.

He was sent out on loan to Paulton Rovers and Clevedon Town during his second season with The Gas, but he was one of fifteen players released in the summer of 2010.

Career[]

After coming up through the Rovers youth system, James was promoted to the professional ranks in 2008. By August 2009 he had yet to make a first team appearance for any senior club, and was sent out on loan to Paulton Rovers for a month in order to gain some experience. This spell was a success, and the two clubs agreed to extend the deal to a second month, and later a third. After a brief spell back in Bristol, he ended the 2009–10 season on loan at Clevedon Town, before being released in the summer.

Following his release he trained with Havant & Waterlooville over the summer, but declined the opportunity to join them in favour of a move to Spain to join the Glenn Hoddle Academy, based near Jerez. He made nine appearances for Jerez Industrial, the club associated with Hoddle's academy, in Group 10 of the Tercera División during 2010–11. He returned to Havant & Waterlooville early in March 2011, where he played alongside another former Rovers player in Sammy Igoe.

The following season he moved to Staines Town, but not before a delay at the beginning of the campaign when it emerged that Staines needed to obtain international clearance due to his stint in Spain. His stay was brief however, and he moved to Metropolitan Police FC in October 2011.
