Central defender James Tunnicliffe joined Rovers on a season-long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion on 15 July 2010, having been brought in to provide depth to the defence following the release of Steve Elliott from the club at the end of the previous season.

CareerEdit

Manchester-born James started his footballing career with local side Stockport County, making his debut for them in 2005 at the age of 16, shortly after spending some time on trial with Liverpool. The Merseyside club decided that they weren't prepared to meet the £750,000 price tag that was placed on him by The Hatters, and he returned to Edgeley Park and went on to make 41 League appearances for them.

A year after a brief loan spell with Northwich Victoria in 2007, Tunnicliffe turned down the offer of a move to Southampton, stating that he felt he would be better served by staying put.

In the 2009 off-season he signed for Brighton & Hove Albion for an undisclosed fee, and immediately established himself as a first-team player under manager Russell Slade. After Slade lost his job, and was replaced by Gus Poyet in November 2009 James became more of a fringe player and eventually found himself loaned out to Milton Keynes Dons to gain some match experience. After returning to the south coast he was loaned out again, this time to Bristol Rovers for the whole of the 2010–11 season. When this deal expired he was released by Brighton and he joined Wycombe Wanderers on a year-long deal the following season. After a month-long loan at Crewe Alexandra he was again released in the summer of 2012.

He was signed to a two-year contract by his first senior club, Stockport County, in time for the start of the 2012–13 campaign, and was almost an ever-present for them in the Conference National division, missing just one of the club's 46 league games.
