James Palmer is a former Bristol Rovers squad member who never made a first team appearance. He is a product of the Rovers youth system at the Bristol Academy of Sport, and was promoted to the pro ranks in the summer of 2006 at the same time as Sean Rigg, Mike Green and Tom Parrinello.
Although James came through the Rovers youth system he never made a first team appearance. He was sent out on loan to Tiverton Town early in the 2007-08, and was released from the club shortly after his return. He later joined Weston-super-Mare, who loaned him to Gloucester City during the 2008–09 season, where he played five games in all competitions. In the summer of 2009 he signed permanently for Gloucester, and played a total of 28 games for The Tigers during the 2009–10 season. The following season was a complete write-off with James having to endure spending the whole campaign on the sidelines with a serious injury. This was a trying time for him, as not only was there uncertainty about his ability to recover, but he also suffered the death of his father, Dave Palmer, also a former Rovers player, who died in hospital on 2 March 2011 from complications following surgery to fit a pacemaker.
