On 18 August 2009 Rovers played their third league game of the season, an away game against Hartlepool United. Rovers boss Paul Trollope named an unchanged 11 from the 2-0 win over Stockport County three days previous.
Rovers went into the game looking for their third win on the bounce while Hartlepool were looking for their first league win of the season.
Hartlepool took the lead through Dennis Behan half an hour into the game before goals from Aaron Lescott and Jo Kuffour late in the first half put Rovers into the lead and the game remained that way through the second half.
