Gary Twigg is a forward who joined Rovers on loan from Derby County at the end of the 2003-04 season. He played in eight games for the Pirates, starting seven of those and coming on as a substitute once. He failed to find the back of the net in those games.
After having been a youth player at Derby, Gary progressed through to the first team squad in 2000, when he was still only 16 years old. He made his debut for the club in a Premiership game against Sunderland in 2002 when he was still only 18 years old. He spent a further four years with the Rams, with loan spells at Burton Albion and Bristol Rovers, before leaving the club in 2004, having made just one start and eight appearances from the bench.
A year after leaving Derby Gary signed for Scottish side Airdrie United, where he remained for two years. He scored seventeen times in 57 league games for the Diamonds. He started the 2007-08 season with Oxford United, but after having made only nine league appearances he left the club in the January transfer window and joined Hamilton Acidemical, where he stayed for the remainder of the season. In the summer of 2008 he moved to Brechin City in the Scottish Second Division, and when Brechin manager Michael O'Neill was appointed boss of Shamrock Rovers in February 2009 Gary followed him across the Irish Sea.
He was a huge hit in his first season, scoring 24 goals in 34 games to become the League of Ireland's top goalscorer, and picking up the club's player of the year award as well as the PFAI Player of the Year award. He repeated his scoring exploits in the 2010 season, this time scoring 20 goals and again topping the goalscorer tables to help The Hoops on their way to picking up the League of Ireland title.
He left Shamrock Rovers at the end of the 2012 season, joining Northern Irish side Portadown on a 3½-year contract in January 2013. The move enabled him to play nearer his home in Bellymena, cutting down the amount of time he spent on the road.
