Bristol Rovers and Derby County have faced each other 27 times in competitive football, with the slightly better record of twelve wins to nine belonging to The Rams.

The clubs met for the first time on 29 August 1953 in a Division Two fixture that saw The Pirates win 3–0 at Eastville Stadium. It was only Rovers' fourth ever match in the second tier of English football, having been promoted as champions of the Third Division at the end of the previous season.

The vast majority of games between the two teams have been played in the Football League, along with three FA Cup matches, which were played in 1975, 2002 and 2007.
