David McCracken joined Rovers on loan from Brentford in January 2011 by short-lived manager Dave Penney, who was looking to add some depth to the squad at a time they were struggling for results. He was initially brought in for a one-month spell to cover for the suspended Danny Coles in the centre-back position, but shortly before the close of the January transfer window the deal was extended to the end of the 2010–11 season, although injury and suspension kept him out of the squad for much of this spell. He eventually went on to make 10 appearances comprising of five starts and five from the bench before returning to his parent club.
He has been capped by Scotland at under-21 level, and also has a Scottish Cup runners-up medal from the 2004–05 season.
David started his playing career in his native Scotland, turning out 179 times in the SPL for Dundee United between his debut in May 2000 and leaving the club in 2007. At this point he joined Wycombe Wanderers on a free transfer, where he stayed for two years until moving to Milton Keynes Dons in 2009.
In the summer of 2010 he moved to Brentford, and although he had been a first-team regular at his previous clubs he failed to establish himself with the London side, making just one league start and one substitute appearance, as well as one game in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, before joining Rovers on loan in January 2011.
