Dan Cayford is a central defender who was promoted to the Rovers senior squad from the youth team in the summer of 2009. He graduated into the pro ranks at the same time as his fellow former trainees Neikell Plummer, Eliot Richards, Mark Cooper, Ollie Clarke, George Booth, Steve Kingdon and Jack McKenna, but was released after just a year without having made any first team appearances.
Career[]
He first appeared in the Rovers first team matchday squad on 26 August 2009, when he was an unused sub in a 3–1 defeat to Cardiff City in the second round of the League Cup, and he again sat on the bench for the duration of the 2–1 defeat at Wycombe Wanderers in League One three days later. His third and final appearance on the bench came on 1 September 2009 in a goalless draw against Hereford United in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, which Hereford won 4–2 in a penalty shootout.
Midway through September 2009 he joined Chippenham Town on loan, initially for a month, where he teamed up with fellow Rovers loanee Charlie Clough. The spell was successful, and was eventually extended to the maximum permitted three months. He played in eight Southern League games for The Bluebirds without scoring, as well as playing in two FA Cup, three FA Trophy, and one Southern League Cup match.
After his release by Rovers in 2010 Dan joined the Glenn Hoddle Academy along with teammate James Tyrell, who was also released at this time. They both played for Spanish side Jerez Industrial in Group 10 of the Tercera División during the 2010–11 season, the club having signed a deal to use the academy's players in their squad.
On his return to England in 2011 he had a trial with Plymouth Argyle, but they opted not to take him on, leading him to sign for non-league side Barnstaple Town. He moved to Bideford in January 2012, before turning out for Torquay United's reserves in an effort to earn a contract with them. He was again unsuccessful in his endeavours however and he moved on for a brief spell in the South West Peninsula League with Stoke Gabriel, before moving to Ytterhogdals IK to resume his professional career in Sweden.
He stayed with Ytterhogdals playing Division Three football (the fifth level of football in Sweden) for the duration of the 2012 season. The following year he remained in Sweden, moving up a division to play for Division Two side Morön BK in the northern city of Skellefteå, an area more noted for its ice hockey prowess than for football.
