A 4–3 defeat on penalties to Exeter City not only marked Rovers' elimination from the Football League Trophy for the 2010–11 season, but also the end of Paul Trollope's reign as the club's manager. The board took the decision to place him on 'gardening leave' the day after this match, citing disappointing results and falling attendances as the reason for his termination.

The most disappointed man on the field at the end of the game was probably Byron Anthony, who not only scored an own goal during the game but was also the only player to miss in the resulting penalty shoot-out.
