Rovers were eliminated at the first round stage of the League Cup by a 3–1 scoreline for the second year running, this time by Watford, having lost by the same scoreline at Ipswich Town's Portman Road a year earlier.

Ongoing injury problems at the club meant that John Ward was unable to fill the substitutes bench for the second game running, and The Pirates found themselves outclassed by a team that play their football two divisions above them. The visitors were three goals up inside 35 minutes, thanks to two goals from Sean Murray and one from Gabriele Angella, before Eliot Richards scored what would prove to be a consolation goal shortly before half time.
