Rovers' first home game of the 2011–12 season ended in defeat to Torquay United, the team that new Gas manager Paul Buckle had left just three months earlier. The decisive goal was scored from the penalty spot by former Rovers loanee Rene Howe, who had scored just once in twelve league appearances for The Pirates the previous season, after Taiwo Atieno, the scorer of Torquay's first goal, had been brought down in the box by Rovers' keeper Scott Bevan.

Defender Byron Anthony headed in a 56th-minute consolation goal for Rovers when the ball was parried into his path by Torquay 'keeper Robert Olejnik, but The Gas were unable to kick on from there to take a share of the points.
