On 23 February 2008 Rovers hosted Tranmere Rovers at the Memorial Stadium. Coach Paul Trollope kept the same starting eleven from the previous match, the FA Cup win over Southampton. The only change to the lineup on the bench was the return of Anthony Pulis, who was cuptied for the Southampton game, in place of Chris Carruthers.

Before the game kicked off Rovers were 16th in League One and Tranmere were fifth.
