Exeter City came to Bristol on 1 December 2009 to face Rovers in a League One fixture at the Memorial Stadium. Going in to the game Rovers had lost seven of their last nine games, but in spite of this were still within touching distance of the playoff positions. Exeter meanwhile had not won a league game at Bristol Rovers since October 1931, a run stretching back 22 matches.
The Exeter lineup for this game included Rovers old boy Marcus Stewart, making his first appearance at the Mem some thirteen years after leaving The Pirates to join Huddersfield Town. The match itself was decided by a single goal, which was Darryl Duffy's first league goal of the season.
