Rovers played their eighth League One match of the 2009-10 season against Brentford on 19 September 2009. Going in to the game Rovers were flying high in the league, sitting in third place behind Charlton Athletic and Leeds United with five wins and two defeats in their previous seven games.
New loan signing Chris Dickson had been brought to the club from Charlton shortly before this game and his impact on the field was immediate, scoring just eleven minutes into his debut and adding a second just sixteen minutes later. His lack of recent first team football showed in the second half however, and he had to be taken off after 64 minutes due to tiredness. The recent goalscoring form of Aaron Lescott continued in this game, with him netting his second of the season and his fifth in just over six months after failing to score any goals at all in his first five years in Bristol.
Brentford earned a consolation goal in the second half and the game ended in a 3–1 victory to the Pirates, keeping them in third place in League One.
