Barrow and Bristol Rovers have met in competitive fixtures seven times with Rovers winning four of those. The teams met six times in Division Three during the late 1960s and in 1970, and once more in a controversial FA Cup tie in 2006. The Cup game is the only match between these teams that resulted in a win for the visiting side.
James Cotterill IncidentEdit
The FA Cup First Round match between the sides in 2006 made national headlines after Barrow defender James Cotterill punched Sean Rigg in an off the ball incident. The referee didn't see the incident, but it was caught by the BBC Match of the Day camera's which were filming the match for the shows evening highlights programme. In another incident during the same game, Steve Phillips was narrowly missed when a fan threw a coin towards him.
Rigg was left with a double fracture of the jaw and could only eat using a teaspoon and drink through a straw. He had two metal plates inserted into his jaw, which will remain permanently.
Cotterill was banned from football activity by the FA until March 2007 and immediately quit Barrow. In January 2007 Cotterill was jailed for four months after pleading guilty to grievous badly harm. He was released the following month and went on to join Ossett Town.
