The Pirates' lack of consistency in the early part of the 2011–12 season continued with a 2–1 defeat at the hands of Accrington Stanley, marking the fifth time a Rovers win this campaign (in this case the 2–0 victory over Dagenham & Redbridge a week earlier) had been followed immediately by a defeat.

Blackburn Rovers loanee Micah Evans opened the scoring for Stanley just five minutes into his Football League debut, but they suffered a setback nine minutes later when goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin was injured in a challenge with Scott McGleish and had to be replaced. This didn't faze them however and they doubled their advantage before the break through Kevin Long.

Joe Anyinsah pulled a goal back for Rovers early in the second half, but this would prove to be nothing more than a consolation as they failed to find the back of the net a second time. The game ended on something of a sour note when Peter Murphy was sent off late in injury time for a foul on Mustapha Carayol in an incident which also saw Carayol booked for retaliating.
