The number 48 was not generally used in English league football until the introduction of squad numbers into the club game. This was initially done by the Premier League in 1993, followed by the Football League in 1999.

An unusually high number for a football team, it has only been used by a single player, Daniel Jones, who was brought in on loan from Wolves in February 2010. The reason for its use was that The Gas had a large squad during the 2009–10 season, and a number of under-18 players were also assigned squad numbers that year, so 48 was actually the lowest number available when Jones joined the club.
