The number 36 was not generally used in English league football until the introduction of squad numbers into the club game. This was initially done by the Premier League in 1993, followed by the Football League in 1999.

It was first worn by a Rovers player when Marcus Andreasson returned to the club towards then end of the 1999–00 season. He had begun the campaign with Rovers, but after a spell playing in Sweden the 15 shirt which had been allocated to him was now being worn by Vitālijs Astafjevs, forcing the club to issue him with a new number until the end of the season.
