The number 33 was not used in English league football until the introduction of squad numbers into the club game. This was initially done by the Premier League in 1993, followed by the Football League in 1999.
The first player to wear the number 33 during a match was goalkeeper Rhys Evans, who spent a portion of the 1999–00 season on loan from Chelsea. The number would later be allocated to two more goalkeepers, Martin Horsell and Steve Book, neither of whom wore it in a competitive match.
The man who has played the most games in the 33 shirt for Rovers is winger Mark McKeever, who made 12 appearances in 2001. No player has ever scored a league goal wearing this number.
