The number 13 shirt is often considered unlucky by managers and players and is often not used by teams. In the days before squad numbers and only two subs were allowed to be named on the bench, they would commonly be numbered 12 and 14 to avoid a player having to wear the number 13.
This tradition of avoiding the number 13 has continued on and off since the introduction of squad numbers in 1999. Just two players have been allocated the number 13 jersey, both of them goalkeepers.
